Different Grooming Cuts For Poodles
Poodle Grooming can be either very difficult or very hard
depending on what type of cut you want.
If you are getting ready for a dog show the only two types
of poodle clips allowed are the Continental or English
Saddle.
The only other cut that is allowed is the Sporting Clip, but
this is only allowed in the Stud Dog or Brood Bitch poodle
classes.
If you have no interest in taking the time to perfect your
dog grooming skills, it is best left to professional dog
groomers.
But if you take the time to learn how to trim your poodle
yourself you will find it very rewarding. It may not come
out close to perfect the first several or many times, but
eventually you will improve.
It took me about 6 months even get somewhat good at even
giving my poodles a basic trim.
Poodle grooming is something you must do on a very frequent
schedule otherwise their coats become tangled and matted.
If you are not showing your poodle the easiest clip to do is
to just shave the hair short all over.
Before you start grooming your poodle make sure you give
them a bath. Before they get wet comb through the coat
first, then wash them.
Make sure you use a good quality dog show shampoo, not a
human shampoo. Then use a coat conditioner which makes
the poodle coat much easier to cut and style.
After the bath make sure the coat is completely dry
before attempting to style.
I start with a clippers and shave the areas you want to
clip. For the Continental clip I clip the face,
throat, feet, and part of the tail.
I also clip the top part of the legs leaving pompons around
the ankles.
I then use a good scissors to round out the none shaved
areas. Just us the scissors and try and round out the
areas as much as possible.
Remember when it comes to poodle grooming, less is
more. Only take off a little amount of hair at a
time, because once you make a mistake you have
to wait until the hair grows back to try
it again.
I hope you found this article somewhat useful, I have
several more in depth articles on this website
