Poodle In Heat

Is Your Poodle In Heat?

1.  Poodles start to cycle between 5 and 9 months

2.  Once a female Poodle reaches puberty it begins its regular cycles of estrus or heat which allows the dog to release eggs and reproduce.

3.  Most Poodles have 2 cycles per year.

4.  Signs that your Poodle is in heat include:

  • vaginal discharge which is clear.
  • bleeding and swelling of the vulva.
  • increased restlessness.
  • increased urination.

5.  Poodles will only actually allow a male to mount for a brief period of time during the heat cycle, which is often referred to as “standing heat.”

6.  Unless you are a professional dog breeder you should spay the Poodle before her first heat.

7.  If the dog becomes pregnant the gestation time is 58-63 days.

8.  There are no visible signs until the last 3 weeks of pregnancy when the teats will enlarge, the belly will start to visibly swell.

9.  Poodles that haven't become pregnant go through 'false pregnancy' where their mammary glands may enlarge and produce milk. They might mother toys, whine, prefer extra attention, or extra solitude, and will show no interest in mating.

These are the 9 basics things you need to be aware of if you think you have a poodle in heat.
