Poodle Training Tips And Techniques

Poodle training is actually fairly easy compared to other breeds of dogs, like the beagle or Chihuahua.

Poodles are one of the smartest dog breeds and actually learn the fastest of any dogs.  Poodles are so trainable they have been used in circuses to entertain the audiences and have even entered French royalty thru the ages.

Remember it is a proven fact that dogs learn quicker through positive reinforcement than negative reinforcement.  Positive reinforcement cold be anything the dog likes, from affection to liver treats.

Housebreaking A Poodle

The first type of poodle training you will likely be doing is housebreaking or potty training your poodle.  Poodles will pick this training up quickly if you do it correctly.

For the first week after you bring your poodle puppy home you should take them outside every two hours, and possibly even every hour so they get the hang of going to the bathroom outside.

When they do go to the bathroom outside make sure you praise them and show them affection.  They have to learn that going to the bathroom outside is associated with good things, and going inside the house is associated with bad things.

You should also take them outside right after eating and first thing in the morning, and last thing at night.

The main thing is to maintain consistency on your part and keep to the schedule.  Dogs love schedules and if you provide them with a strict one housebreaking is easy.

Most people run into problems housebreaking because they don't let the dog outside on a regular consistent basis.

Teach A Poodle Commands

Basic poodle training also involves the use of commands.  Some people say you should start to train your dog until they are at least 4 months old, but I have found, you can start poodles earlier because of their superior intelligence.

The most basic of all commands is the sit command.  This is a great one to master first because it can be incorporated into all kinds of other training.

For example if your poodle jumps up on people to greet them, you can instead teach them to sit when meeting new people, and that solves a major behavior problem because they know the basic sit command

Poodle Hunting Training

Poodle training also involves hunting and retrieving training sometimes.  Although few people realize it, poodles are great hunters, and they were originally used as hunting dogs in Germany.
